Design on a Dime! | Israel Booklet Design

So, I know what you’re thinking….using a graphic designer probably costs a fortune! Well, as with anything – you can go as far with it as you want — but you don’t have to sell your firstborn just to get something professionally designed!

There are things that you can do to prepare beforehand that can save you HUNDREDS of dollars! Nope! Not Kidding!

One of the things that graphic designers (the good ones, anyways :D) have in their back pockets is the ability to gauge how long it takes to do certain tasks — multi-tasking ninjas, so to speak!! Not only do we have to bring home the bacon, we gotta come home and fry it up! Never be afraid to ask a graphic designer about how to cut down on their time. Most good graphic designers have an idea of what the customer can accomplish on their own, and just how much time and money it will save them.

For example, last month when Calvary Chapel Knoxville gave Nickie Lewis Design a call – they were on a fixed budget, but wanted something that looked nice and professional.

Calvary Chapel Knoxville goes to Israel every 2 years, and this year they wanted a booklet they could carry with them as they followed the pastor in his teachings, as well as, jot down notes. It could become a keepsake of sorts, as well!

How did Nickie Lewis Design save them money you ask? Well, for starters, they had everything typed up and ready to go when it came to the inside pages containing all of Pastor Mark’s notes. Did that save them LOTS of money? Yes! I was able to convert their file, make it one color (which also saves tons of money), and make it to size and it was ready to go!

For the cover, they weren’t really sure what they wanted. Obviously, it needed to be something that represented the trip to Israel, but that was about all that they had in mind. Once we were a couple days into the project, I got an email from the pastor asking if we could add a map of Israel inside the book. That’s when it dawned on me…let’s make the entire front and back cover one big map! That way, the people could just grab their booklets, open them up flat, and see the custom map of every place they would be setting their feet on for 2 weeks in June!

Oh! And guess what? That saved them money too!!! By making the front and back cover a custom map for their trip, no extra pages were needed on the inside, and this cover could literally be the same cover they use the next time they go!

So, the moral of this story is — using a graphic designer doesn’t have to cost a fortune. The key is to find someone who has experience. Even though they may cost more per hour, you generally don’t have as many hours billed because they know what they’re doing!!!

Business Card Design

To Judge or Not to Judge | Radworks Business Card Design

Ahhh…business cards. Some love ‘em, some hate ‘em. Whatever side of the fence you’re on — they’re a necessity for any business owner!

So I know that I’m always spouting about first impressions…but hey, you gotta admit that you have an instant preconceived judgement the moment that someone hands that card over.

Let’s just be honest, most of the time you plan to trash that card when you get home….or will you?

If that card is different, maybe if the paper feels different, or maybe if the ink is metallic, or it just has a great design…you might keep it for a little bit. Just because it’s kinda cool 😀

For Devon Campbell, owner of Radworks, a web development company, his business card meant making the first impression stick with you. He wanted something so incredibly simple, yet so different that it made you think. That it spoke to whomever’s lovely hands that it fell into, that this isn’t just any web development company. This company knows what it’s doing, and they take pride in their work. That just like the pure awesomeness of their business card, they will not only make you one kickin’ website, but that they will pay attention to every detail and produce something that they can be proud of.

For Devon’s business card, he decided to go with a 220lb. paper (super thick!) with the use of a letterpress. For me, this was icing on the cake. Not only did I have a customer who understood the importance of readability and negative space, but he also wanted something different. Something that you don’t see on just anyone’s business cards!

Letterpress is a technique of relief printing, meaning not only is the ink applied, but it is also “stamped” into the card. This is why we wanted to go with such a thick paper. This gives the card a vintage or classic feel, but it’s paired with a very modern font and logo.

So, how does your business card look? What does your current business card “say” to people when you hand it over? Like it or not, your business card speaks just as loudly as whether you walk into your next business meeting in a suit, or sweatpants.

Logo Design

Screamin’ for Ice Cream Over Here!!! Chadwick’s Churn Logo Design

The awesome thing about my job is that I get to work with so many different types of companies. I mean, a gourmet ice cream shop?!?!? What’s the saying?…”We all scream for ice cream..?”

When I was contacted by The Social Farmer, a social media management company, to team up with Nickie Lewis Design in creating the new logo design for Chadwick’s Churn located in Alcoa, TN,  I was super excited!

Sometimes as a graphic designer, you will design a logo for a company that is just beginning, and other times you will help “revamp” what they already have going. For Chadwick’s Churn, we got to take what they already had and remake the logo. Kind’ve like a “whole body make-over!”

If it’s at all possible, when designing a new look, you will want to keep some of the elements that they already have. Why? Because whether you realize it or not – how a company represents themselves visually allows you to identify who they are. Unless one of my clients specifically says that they want nothing to do with the old look, I will try my best to flow in some of their past look for an easier visual transition. Sometimes it’s using the same font, sometimes it’s the color, and for Chadwick’s Churn, we kept many of the elements, but gave it an updated look.

Chadwick’s wanted to keep a fun feel, and so that’s why we went with the more playful (yet very readable!) font choice. Just like Chadwick’s offers the ability to totally customize your ice cream, they also wanted that completely custom feel to their logo, hence using the two “C’s” as the ice cream on the top!
